Mother Katerra Lewis, along with her roommate left the job of caring for 5 children to an 8-year-old.
According to CNN, Lewis let the 8-year-old boy, whose parents have not been identified, watch her daughter as well as her roommates four younger children.
Lewis, and her roommate left the young boy in charge while they went to a club and did not return home until two in the morning.
The 8-year-old is being charged with murder after beating the toddler because she kept screaming and crying all night. Birmingham Police Department's Lt. Sean Edwards told reporters on Tuesday that "We did have some information that the 8-year-old got extremely agitated because the 1-year-old refused to stop crying, and so I guess the 8-year-old took it upon himself and began to commit violent acts against the 1-year-old,"
Lewis' daughter suffered severe head trauma and major internal organ damage, which lead to her death. The police report also says that Lewis and the roommate did not check on the children once they got in at 2am, and if they had checked; Lewis' daughter Kelci may be alive today. Lewis found Kelci unresponsive the next morning in her crib. Edwards says police did not receive a call until about 10:30 a.m. The Jefferson County coroner ruled the death a homicide.
Lewis is currently charged with manslaughter, and is currently out of jail on a $15,000 bond. The 8-year-old boy is charged with murder and is currently in custody with the state's Department of Human Resources. It is unknown if the roommate will be charged with anything as well. All children involved were under the age of 8.
