Becky Hammon became the first female head coach in the NBA summer league and it paid off in a championship.
She coached the summer league Spurs to a 93-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the title game in the Las Vegas league. After losing their first game to the New York Knicks, the Spurs went on a tear winning their next 6 games under Hammon, including the title game.
Since being named the first female full-time NBA assistant Hammon has been lauded by Coach Greg Popovich and her players for her first hand knowledge of the game, her energy and her decision-making.
In short, Hammon has garnered the respect of her players simply by being good at what she does. Hammon earned her place and cut her teeth in the WNBA for 16 years after going undrafted in 1999, she's also a 6 time WNBA All-Star and has earned an Olympic bronze medal and gold medal in the Jones Cup
