After suffering a severe head injury at the Pocono Raceway on Sunday, IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson died Monday as a result.
The 37-year-old Wilson was struck in the head by debris from a car driven by rookie driver Sage Karam.
Wilson was rendered unconscious after being hit by the debris then struck an inside wall on the Pocono track. He was airlifted to the Lehigh Valley Hospital where he was treated while in a coma.
Wilson was a native of Sheffield, England, and began in the IndyCar circuit in 2008 after success in open-wheel racing in Formula One and ChampCar.
This is the first IndyCar fatality since 2011 when Dan Wheldon was involved in a 15 car crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300. Wilson is survived by Julia, his wife, and his daughters Jane and Jessica.
