Richard Sherman held a press conference and talked about a fake interview that was posted about him this weekend talking about #BlackLivesMatter. Sherman comments made some people upset but he has some valid points (to an extent) and understanding of what is going on.
"As a black man I do understand that black lives matter... Dealt with a best friend getting killed and it was two 35-year-old black men. Wasn’t no police officers involved. Wasn’t anybody else involved and I didn’t hear anyone shouting ‘Black Lives Matter’ then. And I think that’s the point we need to get to is that we need to deal with our own internal issues before we move forward and start pointing fingers and start attacking other people we need to solidify ourselves as a people and deal with our issues. Because I think as long as we have black-on-black crime and one black man killing another -- if black lives matter, then they should matter all the time,”
Sherman has a point that "black lives should matter all the time", especially since there is a lot of black on black crime that has gone on for years.
However, the point of #BlackLivesMatter is to stop police brutality movement, not an anti cop movement. Many of the cops that makes the movement needed use racial profiling, and Sherman should know how that feels, especially after being called a "thug" last year after winning one of his games.
During the conference, Sherman stated his points clear and stood by what he said, however the #BlackLivesMatter movement has helped the black community, especially with building bonds with people, which in return helped bring down the percentage some black on black crime.
