Life has a funny way of nudging us down paths we seem destined to pursue in hindsight. I firmly believe that everyone has a purpose to fulfill. With that being said, there is no such thing as a coincidence in my book.
Mikaila Ulmer, a ten-year-old entrepreneur by way of Texas has an innate passion for wanting to give. This rare trait served as the catalyst for BeeSweet Lemonade, a vibrant start-up grounded with ambitions of saving our honeybees while simultaneously sharing a part of her Great-Grandmother Helen's soul.
At the age of four Mikaila’s parents encouraged her to come up with a product she could enter into the Acton Children’s Business Fair competition as well as Austin Texas’ Lemonade Day. In accordance with this challenge she put on her thinking cap and reviewed her traumatic experiences with bees. Being stung twice, rightfully so she was afraid of them. But then something strange happened. Seemingly out of nowhere a fascination for them took root.
In pursuit to find out as much about bees as she could, Mikaila stumbled upon the sad but true reality that the world's bee population is dwindling; scientists speculate that pesticides are to blame.
Bees are vital to our ecosystem – without pollination we cannot survive. From there it became clear. Mikaila decided she would sweeten her Great-Grandmother's flaxseed lemonade with honey from local bee keepers.
Since its conception BeeSweet Lemonade has been a hit! Accustomed to selling out of product wherever she goes, Mikaila takes her dream one step further and offers a portion of her company’s sales to domestic and foreign organizations who fight to save honeybees.
My friends, summer is upon us. It's no secret that lemonade is synonymous with this season. If you by chance find yourself parched and in need of refreshment, head on down to your local Whole Foods and pick up some BeeSweet Lemonade.
Helping to heal the planet for future generations never tasted so good. Such foresight and ambition an this early of an age, is anything sweeter than this?
