A team of researchers and roboticists from Stanford University have designed and built a robot that can dive 100 meters. Based on a voyage to recover ancient shipwreck artifacts from the La Lune wreckage, the OceanOne robot was born. Although “the intent here is to have a human diving virtually, to put the human out of harm’s way", this type of research has the potential to be unsettling. However, roboticists have argued, "having a machine that has human characteristics that can project the human diver’s embodiment at depth is going to be amazing." And there is no doubt that such robot discoveries have the potential to expedite exploration and save lives, but at some point will the pros outweigh the cons?
