Lil Uzi Vert Is Philadelphia’s New Anthem Artist, Replacing Meek Mill

The Philadelphia born rapper, known for their eclectic sense of style, may be carrying on the torch in Philly. Lil Uzi Vert is known for making hit after hit, tattoos and expensive piercings. The emo-inspired MC’s aesthetic has inspired him since he was a young kid in the streets of Philly. This past week, the eccentric rock star helped bring the energy that helped the Eagles demolish the 49ers. The Eagles have elected to make Uzi’s hot single the new game day anthem.

While growing up in the city, Vert was influenced by rock, punk and emo bands like Marilyn Manson and Soundgarden, as well as contemporary artists including Pharrell Williams, and Lil Wayne. They also learned a thing or two about the music business from friends who were involved in the industry.

    How it all started

Uzi first began rapping in high school, and became known for their soaring flows and psychedelic production. They’ve since collaborated with Young Thug, Wiz Khalifa and Kanye West, as well as releasing a number of commercial mixtapes.

He’s made a name for himself by experimenting with genres, mixing up trap and Chicago drill with emo-influenced beats. He’s been nominated for several awards, and has sold millions of records.

    The boring parts of fame

But even as they’ve become one of the most popular rappers on the Internet, there’s one part of the business that they don’t particularly enjoy. It’s the endless stream of interviews and photoshoots that come with being a major label star.

In the early years of their career, Uzi was constantly unhappy with this aspect of their work, arguing that they shouldn’t be expected to do it all by himself. Stating that the only people who really understand what’s going on in the hip-hop scene are the artists themselves. Uzi has also argued that they should be allowed to make their own decisions about what to release.

Eventually, the Philly native’s dissatisfaction with the situation led them to leave the label they had signed with (Generation Now) and start a series of spats with some of their former collaborators. Then, after they had reached a peak in their career, they stopped releasing music altogether.

Then, in 2020, they announced the upcoming release of Eternal Atake, their highly anticipated emo-influenced, melodic trap album. After a series of delays, the album was released, and it delivered.

Their mid 2022 single, “I KNOW” is a bouncy track on their most recent EP. Their latest project left their fans hungry for their next full length studio album.

    Vert and Milly

Lil Uzi and Meek Mill have made songs for their city in the past. Last year the 2 released “Blue Notes 2” which came with incredible visuals. The Carters Vision-directed video follows Meek and Lil Uzi popping wheelies through the streets of their hometown of Philadelphia.

Ahead of the Super Bowl next week, the Eagles will spearhead their fiery entrance with Uzi’s “Just Wanna Rock” anthem. Uzi walked out the Eagles during their NFC championship game, where they proceeded to destroy the 49ers 31-7.

Fellow Philly native DJ Drama revealed that Uzi has replaced Meek Mill as the Eagles’ new anthem artist.

“I think it’s fair to say that ‘I Just Wanna Rock’ has replaced — with all due respect — ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ as the new anthem of Philadelphia, as the new anthem of the Philadelphia Eagles this year, I’m looking forward to hearing that song many, many times Super Bowl weekend.”

The Jersey club style single has been dominating the charts as well as the internet for months now. Various fan made videos have given the song over half a billion views on tiktok alone.

Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares” headlined the Eagles Super Bowl run in 2018, further solidifying the song in the lore of Philadelphia.

The Eagles’ new Uzi anthem will lead the way next week as the Philly team hopes to bring home the win like they did in 2018.

Will Lil Uzi Vert’s Jersey club hit give the Eagles the boost they need to bring the win home to Philadelphia? Will all the Philly native celebrities go home satisfied like the last time they were in the Super Bowl?
