You might've found the name Allan Kingdom familiar from his recent feature on Kanye's 2015 track titled "All Day." However, the Canadian artist, who's based in St. Paul, Minnesota, has created even more of a name for himself with his new project titled Northern Lights.
Allan is a soulful lyricist who has a talent for colorful storytelling -- he has a different type of flow that isn't quite like some of the other artists that we've listened to.
The project itself contains impressive lyrics, and solid and catchy hooks over elite production. It's a softer sound but exciting none the less.
His versatility and flow reminds me of artists like Childish Gambino or Andre 3000 -- comparing just those elements more than anything else.
With a rapid and lethal flow and his ability to sing in hooks, Allan Kingdom shows a different aspect to the rap-singing scene that we aren't used to. What we see in the limelight now is more singing than rapping, while he, on the other hand, does more rapping than singing, and only sings if it's necessary.
This mixtape was enjoyable and fun to listen to.
It's hard to pick out a favorite track because of Kingdom's elite prowess. However, if I had to pick one, it would be "Northern Lights," a song describing the grind and determination of a young artist. However, all of the songs had unique touches to them either from Kingdom or his complementary features, thanks to artist such as Chronixx, Jared Evan, D.R.A.M., and Gloss Gang.
His track "Monkey See" provides an upbeat production that showcases Allan's effortless rapping.
D.R.A.M. added more of an alternative sound to "Renovate," which is clearly Allan's strong suit as an individual artist.
"Believe" is a special selection, with it's production, rapid verses and groovy hook, easily making it a song that could be played in a car or in a club.
"Go Fish" is the most enjoyable track out of all of them. This song truly highlights Allan's strengths, and it shows that he can seriously do it all.
After listening to Northern Lights, Allan Kingdom has become one of my favorite artists to keep an eye on in 2016. His style is like nothing that we've ever seen or listened to. It's a breath of fresh air, quite refreshing and divine.
