Every year, we all get excited to see who will be on XXL's Freshmen Cover. But, since we've jumped more into the music scene, here are a few artists who've been making waves in 2016. Maybe we will see them on the cover or as potential contendors
1) Nef the Pharoah:
Nef The Pharaoh has been riding the 2016 wave, especially with his hit song say daat!. Nef has teamed up with Texas producer Cardo, who's been providing works for the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Curren$y and more, to link up for Nef's latest project. This artist combines the rich sound of Bay Area rap with a southern feel to it. Complex named Nef one of the 20 Artists To Watch Out for in 2016, he has debuted on Fader, Billboard, and in December Drake shouted out Nef on Instagram after the too linked during the OVO's general trip to California. XXL named Nef's self-titled EP one of the 20 Best Mixtapes and EP's of 2015. So, definitely keep a lookout for this one.
2) Montana of 300:
This past summer, news of Montana of 300's studio session with Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons, and Kanye West has circulated, clearly showing that although this artist has his independent lane, he does have the support of some heavy hitters in the music scene. But, this artist hasn't just been making waves with music, he also appeared in the first two episodes of Empire this season, taking part in a prison cypher scene alongside Terrence Howard. Montana's single "Slaughterhouse" which released a year prior on his Cursed With A Blessing album landed at #18 on Billboard's Emerging Artists Chart. I wouldn't be surprised if he landed on XXL's Freshman Class list too.
3) Lil Uzi Vert:
North Philly's Lil Uzi Vert has landed on the radar of Power 99's DJ Diamond Kuts and eventually higher industry people like DOn Cannon and DJ Drama. He has been seen with the Snapchat Queen YesJulz. WIth the release of "WDYW" on WorldStarHipHop, Lil Uzi has been riding the wave into 2016, building more momentum as he goes.
