Vashtie Kola Talks Unisex Clothing & Playboy Cover (Photos)
Vashtie Kolais a DJ, filmmaker, artist and designer who has worked with major brands such as Nike, Puma, and Ray Ban. Following her impressive brand collaborations, you can now add Playboy to the list. As part of their No Filter series, she spoke honestly about her early exposure to fashion and design and the stigma against unisex clothing.
"Just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean I want something darling and pink."
Vashtie did not grow up with a silver spoon and lavish lifestyle that included name brand clothing. For her, it wasn't about wearing the hottest name brands, it was about self-expression and surviving the streets of New York. She moved to New York City in 1999 to attend the School of Visual Arts, where she studied film and graduated in 2004. During this time, she worked at popular streetwear brand, Stüssy, which ultimately fueled her interest in fashionand led to the inception of her own clothing brand, Violette, in 2008, a forward thinking unisex brand. Growing up in a time where gender based clothing was in style, where men and women were reluctant to defy style norms, Vashti was the one to push the boundaries and wear clothing brand such as Billionaire Boys Club and Bape. She believes that girls and guys could wear similar styles of clothing to erase gender boundaries. And HYPEFRESH agrees! Kudos to Vashtie Kola for moving culture forward!
