Early Wednesday morning, just two days before the scheduled release of his third studio album, Awaken, My Love!, Childish Gambino cleared his Twitter history except for one tweet.
Clicking on the link brings you to his app, Pharos, which was recently updated to include a VR experience of part of his Pharos concert from back in September. In the video you're surrounded by screaming fans as you look on from the front row. Gambino is adorned in a neon-tribal outfit and sings part of his new single "Me and Your Mama" from what seems like mere feet away. Also, fans who don't have access to a VR headset can still see the concert as a 360-degree video, though its not quite as immersive.
He also added the option to pre-order Awaken, My Love! to his website. Fans can get the physical or digital albums, as well as a package with a poster of the album artwork.
But, on top of that, there's another option... something Gambino's calling a Virtual Reality Vinyl. Nobody's quite sure what this'll end up being, but it is limited so pick it up asap if you're interested. It's $59.99, and it includes the poster, the vinyl, and a digital download of the album, though the VR part remains a mystery.
Gambino's always been good at thinking outside of the box when it comes to album releases, and this times no different. All the mystery has led to some massive hype surrounding this album. The VR concert and Vinyl seem to be his way of taking pre-album promo into the future, and if this album is a huge success it'd be shocking not to see more artists follow suit.
