Get rid of your bed. Remove the frame and pillows. Throw it in the middle of the street because eventually it will be a thing of the past. According to sleep researchers around the world, humans will only need 5 to 6 hours of sleep in year 2055 based on evolution. To accommodate this means using technology and the manipulation of our surroundings to optimize our sleep patterns. In other words, we will now be sleeping in bubble-shaped pods! Wrapped in "smart" pajamas that monitor sleep patterns while adjusting sound, light and temperature, the future of sleeping will drastically change because we are evolving. Think about it. How many of your friends actually get 7-8 hours of sleep at night? I'm with one of my best friends now and he operates effectively on a mere 4-5 hours. Therefore, I can conclude that researchers may be correct on this theory.
Imagine a world where everyone is more productive. Everyone is more alert and energized to navigate life. These are the things that researchers promise but only through getting the most out of our sleep. The answer to this conundrum is once again, a sleeping pod. In fact, companies like Google have already introduced early retail models like the Tranquility Pod. Human studies show a strong correlation to hours spent in the pod with greater performance. 30 percent to be exact. So I guess it sounds promising.
On the other side, what will happen to our basic human nature? Tampering with such measures do not always end well. What are the biological side-effects that are not being discussed? I wonder at what price less sleep will cost. And at what point will sleep become obsolete? Are humans really evolving into...um vampires? I need help with this one. I'm interested in your thoughts.
